The presence of a foreign accent introduces lexical integration difficulties during late semantic processing

چکیده

Previous research suggests that native listeners may be more tolerant to syntactic errors when they are produced in a foreign accent. However, studies investigating this topic within the semantic domain remain conflicting. The current study examined effects of mispronunciations leading abnormality foreign-accented speech. While their EEG was recorded, speakers Spanish listened semantically correct and incorrect sentences by another speaker Chinese. anomaly caused subtle mispronunciation (typical or atypical Chinese-accented Spanish) during critical word production. initial-stage processing yielded no accent-specific differences, late revealed persistent N400-effect foreign-accent but not native-accent. These findings suggest difficult integrate than native-accented errors, regardless relative typicality. distinction between speech is discussed.

Cross-Modal Integration of Lexical-Semantic Features during Word Processing: Evidence from Oscillatory Dynamics during EEG

In recent years, numerous studies have provided converging evidence that word meaning is partially stored in modality-specific cortical networks. However, little is known about the mechanisms supporting the integration of this distributed semantic content into coherent conceptual representations. In the current study we aimed to address this issue by using EEG to look at the spatial and tempora...

Adapting to Lexical Stress in a Foreign Accent

An exposure-test paradigm was used to examine whether Dutch listeners can adapt their perception to non-canonical marking of lexical stress in Hungarian-accented Dutch. During exposure, one group of listeners heard only words with correct initial stress, while another group also heard examples of unstressed initial syllables that were marked by high pitch, a possible stress cue in Dutch. Subseq...

On the Problem of Lexical Semantic Change

The article provides an insight into a problem of lexical semantic change. A short historical outline of the development of semantic studies is given. The authors analyze some of the most important stages in the history of the formation of this field. The existing approaches to dealing with form and meaning, namely semasiological and onomasiological ones are discussed. The authors consider the ...

Contending with foreign accent variability in early lexical acquisition

By their second birthday, children are beginning to map meaning to form with relative ease. One challenge for these developing abilities is separating information relevant to word identity (i.e. phonemic information) from irrelevant information (e.g. voice and foreign accent). Nevertheless, little is known about toddlers’ abilities to ignore irrelevant phonetic detail when faced with the demand...
